How We Can Help
Nothing happens in isolation. Our approach is integrated, taking a whole of person and systemic approach drawing on evidenced based therapy modalities which are well-researched and utilised in clinical practice. At our appointment we’ll discuss the therapy approaches which may be most effective for your particular concerns and how they can be implemented.
Areas of Speciality

Depression
Everyone may experience mood changes, particularly during difficult times. Depression involves feelings of persistent sadness, emptiness, agitation, reduced enjoyment and motivation, social withdrawal, and changes to concentration, memory, appetite, and sleep. Depression may also involve elevated or agitated moods, racing thoughts, greater productivity, and impulsivity. There may also be self-harm or suicidal thoughts. Psychological therapy can effectively help you reduce or manage symptoms of depression to optimise your well-being.

Anxiety
We all have worry and need anxiety for motivation and survival. Ongoing anxiety can involve feelings of panic, restlessness, physical tension, problems with attention and memory, appetite and sleep. It can also impact school, social and work functioning. It can occur at specific times or be persistent. However, it is treatable. Working with a psychologist can help you to understand your anxiety better, and learn or build upon existing strategies to reduce or manage it so you can pursue the things that matter to you.

Trauma
Life can bring unexpected events which are highly distressing and traumatic. We can have unwanted memories, nightmares, flashbacks, lower mood, anxiety, agitation, horror, guilt, hypervigilance, problems with sleep and high levels of avoidance which affect all aspects of our functioning. Our mind can struggle to process the traumatic events, even with time, causing us to experience symptoms over and over again. Trauma-specific psychological therapy will help you process and alleviate the experiences to move forward.

Stress
Stress is a natural part of our life that is integral to maintaining healthy functioning. At optimal levels, it will enhance our motivation and performance. However, at higher levels long-term it can affect mental health and physical wellbeing. Psychological therapy can assist you in managing high levels of stress.

Relationships
Relationships can bring so much joy and connection. At times, a relationship may be changing or feel stressful for many reasons, including interpersonal differences, existing commitments, caregiving demands, financial strain, trauma, grief and loss, drug and alcohol use, mental health issues and legal matters. Relationship-focussed therapy, individually and together, can help at any stage. It can help you feel more connected and communicate optimally to resolve issues, enhance your relationship, and for partners to take further steps forward together or end a relationship in a respectful and healthy way.

Grief and Loss
We experience grief with many different types of losses and changes in our lives. For example, when we move to new locations, a relationship or job ends, and when we lose a loved pet or someone close. We may find it hard to make sense of it and have many feelings arise, including denial, anger, bargaining, guilt, regret, sadness, resentment and sometimes relief. Grief can be more complicated with sudden traumatic loss or in difficult situations. Speaking to someone can help with processing your grief and coping with how different things are as life carries you forward.

ADHD, ASD, Chronic Health Conditions and Disability
Some of us are born with a neurodevelopmental condition or disability. For others, a health condition or disability can emerges later associated with lifestyle factors, prolonged stress, illness, an accident or other circumstance. Living with a neurodevelopmental disorder including ADHD and ASD, a chronic health condition or disability can be a lot for an individual, their family and friends. Whilst it is not who we are, there can be many unique and complex challenges. Psychological support can help with diagnosis, adjustment following diagnosis and management of your condition, enhancing your mental and physical well-being to pursue things that matter to you.

Fertility and Pregnancy
Being a parent can be one of the most rewarding and hardest experiences we will ever face. Parenting can also take many forms. For some, the path to parenthood can be long and complicated, or very sudden. Whether it is support around the decision to have a child, identification of fertility issues, support during fertility treatment, pre-natal or post-natal depression and anxiety, or other complications within the pregnancy, birth or post-birth, psychological support can assist you along the way as you navigate this part of life.
Therapeutic Approaches

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing Therapy
EMDR is a gold standard neurobiological treatment for highly painful or traumatic events, and the significantly changed beliefs and emotional distress which it creates. EMDR can achieve effective results in rapid time frames compared to other approaches.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy
ACT is a highly effective and widely researched experienced based therapy with the core goals of building flexibility, learning to connect more with the present moment, building adaptive responses to difficult and distressing thoughts, physical feelings and emotions, and living a rich full and meaningful life in accordance with your core values.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
CBT is also a gold standard therapy for many issues focussed on identifying and changing distressing unhelpful ways of thinking, working with painful emotions and uncomfortable physical sensations with regulation techniques and adjusting behaviour which may be learned patterns. Problem solving skills and facing rather than avoiding difficult situations are also part of a CBT approach.

Dialectical Behavioural Therapy Skills
DBT is a modified cognitive and behavioural therapy which was developed to assist individuals with Borderline Personality Disorder. It has since been adapted and is very effective for several issues. The core focus of DBT skills is on regulating emotions, tolerating distress, being in the present moment, and adaptive communication to enhance personal coping and improve your relationship with others.

Schema Therapy
Schema Therapy is an integrated approach which examines negative dysfunctional thoughts and core beliefs ‘schemas’ that develop when our needs are unmet and are reinforced across our lifespan in different ways of coping, known as ‘modes’. Schemas sit underneath many concerns, contributing to low self-esteem and other issues which are identified and addressed through therapy.

What to Expect From Us
Therapy
The Initial Session
This is the time to get to know each other and build a connection. At the initial appointments, it's important to understand your history, current issues you have been experiencing, what you might need from therapy, whether you have sought help before and what you liked (or didn’t!). We will also consider whether we are the right fit for one another, therapy approaches and particular strategies that will benefit, timeframes for therapy and the best time for appointments for you.
Further Sessions
As therapy progresses, the therapist and client increase their familiarity. Some people seek therapy for the space to safely talk without burdening others, whilst others want to deepen their understanding, process previous experiences, and to learn and implement skills and strategies to create lasting changes. Whilst we can focus on certain areas across appointments, sometimes things arise or change unexpectedly, which you may like to discuss at the time of your next appointment. Our approach is flexible to accommodate your needs, and we will work with you to learn what will fit you best.
Final Sessions
Therapy doesn’t need to be a long-term thing. When you feel things are going well and you're comfortable, later sessions are focussed on reflection on the progress made, including insights and skills attained. Some people also like appointments occasionally as a check-in to maintain balance and on the chance that other things arise.
Supervision
The Initial Session
This is the time to get to know each other and build rapport. At the initial appointments it’s important to get an overview of who you are, your broader life, your qualifications and the stage of your career, professional requirements and timeframes, previous supervision experiences, any issues you have been experiencing or questions you may have and goals for supervision. We will also consider what style of supervision works for you, whether we are the right fit for each other, approaches and skills that will benefit you and the best appointment times.
Further Sessions
In these appointments we will review what was covered in previous sessions and your progress throughout, continue work focussed in certain areas, identify further skills for development, steps to get there and timeframes. Sometimes things arise or change unexpectedly which you may like to discuss. Our approach is flexible to accommodate your needs, and we will work with you to learn what will fit you best.
